OSX : monitor progression of dd command

dd is somehow the swiss army knife in your unix toolbox when copying raw data from a source to another. For example, when copying an image onto an SD card to use with your RaspberryPi.

But a main drawback of dd is its lack of progress bar. Running dd under OSX (MacOS), there is a simple trick that will allow you to monitor progression of dd command.

Here’s how to do it. First, you’ll need to have an instance of dd running:

As mentioned previously, no progress bar! Now launch activity monitor:

Now select “Disk” tab:

Now all you have to do is to find your instance of dd and check the “Bytes written” column:
